Today’s children will inherit a planet that cannot be revived should the abuse and pollution of this planet continue the way it does. It is a disgrace by humanity how the environment is treated.

This dark future raises the question if our destruction can at least be slowed down or hopefully even be stopped? If the latter remains an option, no further day can be wasted: tomorrow will be too late, and today is the last day to act. Many politicians start to see the writings on the wall, and campaigns begin to happen. However, the numbers of these campaigns are still falling short of what it would take to make a significant reversal. As more efforts are needed, the all too often heard “as-a-single-person-I-cannot-do-anything” mentality must be put aside. Every aid, even the smallest one, will make a difference. To initiate change, we have to start as individuals, and it all begins with consciousness through education.

What are our marching papers? Extinguish the fear of sharks and reveal why they are paramount to saving our oceans. Educators from all walks of life are required. SharkSchool® Teaching needs you too!

The better the approach...

Whenever a person is asked what he or she would like to know about sharks, it is always the same question: “What must I do when a shark shows up?” This very question reflects most people’s attitude towards these animals: the fear of getting attacked. This fear is unfounded, considering that hundreds of millions of people go swimming, diving, and surfing worldwide. That the majority of the sharks live close to shore, and that they represent the most abundant top predators over 50 kg on our planet, the less than 100 incidents that occur yearly make them the least dangerous predators on Earth. This discrepancy demonstrates that the image of sharks is highly biased and, therefore, incorrect.

Should we succeed in eliminating this unfounded fear among the general public, sharks may get the chance they deserve to survive. It is this unjustified fear that encouraged Erich Ritter more than 25 years ago to create the research field of experimental shark-human interaction. His studies focus on different aspects of this topic with the ultimate goal of making these animals better understood. All of his tests and experiments are conducted in open, unrestricted waters with free-swimming sharks of every species possible.

The more thorough we can study sharks up close and personal, the better we are suited to understand, conquer, and overcome our fears.
